HSK 2
多 A
duō A
how A
Structure
Subject + 多 + Adjective?
How it works
The word '多' (duō) can be used as an adverb before an adjective to ask about degrees or measurements such as height, weight, age, or distance. It is the standard way to form 'How [adjective]?' questions in Chinese.
Examples
你多大?
Nǐ duō dà?
How old are you?
从这儿到公司多远?
Cóng zhèr dào gōngsī duō yuǎn?
How far is it from here to the company?
这件衣服多重?
Zhè jiàn yīfu duō zhòng?
How heavy is this piece of clothing?
Common mistakes
Do not add '吗' (ma) at the end of the sentence; '多 + Adjective' already makes it a question.
Tip
When answering these questions, you don't use '多' in the reply; simply state the number and the unit (e.g., '一米八' for height).
