每 M N (都) V

měi M N ( dōu) V

every N V

Structure

每 + Measure Word + Noun + (都) + Verb / Adjective

How it works

The word '每' (měi) is used to express 'every' or 'each' in Chinese. It almost always requires a measure word before the noun, and the adverb '都' (dōu) is typically used before the verb to emphasize that there are no exceptions to the action.

Examples

我每天都喝咖啡。

Wǒ měitiān dōu hē kāfēi.

I drink coffee every day.

他每个星期都去跑步。

Tā měige xīngqī dōu qù pǎobù.

He goes running every week.

这里的每个学生都很努力。

Zhèlǐ de měige xuéshēng dōu hěn nǔlì.

Every student here is very hardworking.

Common mistakes

Forgetting the measure word between '每' and the noun (e.g., saying '每星期' instead of '每个星期'). Note that '天' and '年' act as their own measure words.

Tip

Think of '每...都...' as a fixed pair; while '都' is technically optional in some contexts, including it makes your Chinese sound much more natural and grammatical.
