HSK 2

最

zuì

the most

Structure

Subject + 最 + Adjective / Psychological Verb

How it works

The word '最' (zuì) is used to express the superlative degree, equivalent to '-est' or 'most' in English. It is placed immediately before an adjective or a psychological verb (like 'love' or 'like') to indicate the highest level of a quality among a group.

Examples

我最喜欢吃西瓜。

Wǒ zuì xǐhuan chī xīguā.

I like eating watermelon the most.

他的汉语最好。

Tā de Hànyǔ zuì hǎo.

His Chinese is the best.

今天天气最冷。

Jīntiān tiānqì zuì lěng.

Today's weather is the coldest.

Common mistakes

Do not put '很' (hěn) or other degree adverbs before '最'. For example, avoid saying '很最喜欢'.

Tip

If you want to say 'one of the most...', the structure is '最 + Adj + 的 + Noun + 之一 (zhī yī)'.
