多亏

duōkuī

thanks to

Structure

多亏 + (Noun/Phrase) + (Result Phrase)

How it works

The word '多亏' (duōkuī) is used to express gratitude toward a person, action, or circumstance that prevented a negative outcome or brought about a positive one. It functions similarly to 'thanks to' or 'luckily' in English. It is often used with '才' or '不然' to emphasize the result.

Examples

多亏了医生的及时抢救,病人终于脱离了危险。

Duōkuīle yīshēng de jíshí qiǎngjiù, bìngrén zhōngyú tuōlíle wēixiǎn.

Thanks to the doctor's timely rescue, the patient is finally out of danger.

多亏你提醒了我,不然我就忘了带护照。

Duōkuī nǐ tíxǐngle wǒ, bùrán wǒ jiù wàngle dài hùzhào.

Thanks to your reminder, otherwise I would have forgotten to bring my passport.

这件事多亏了他帮忙,我们才能提前完成任务。

Zhè jiàn shì duōkuīle tā bāngmáng, wǒmen cáinéng tíqián wánchéng rènwù.

For this matter, thanks to his help, we were able to complete the task ahead of schedule.

Common mistakes

Do not confuse '多亏' with '感谢'. Use '感谢' to thank someone directly (V + Obj), whereas '多亏' introduces the reason or condition that led to a lucky escape or success.

Tip

Look for words like '不然' (otherwise) or '要不是' (if not for) in the second half of the sentence, as they are very common partners for '多亏'.
