HSK 2
往 DIRECTION V
wǎng DIRECTION V
V toward DIRECTION
Structure
Subject + 往 + Direction/Place + Verb
How it works
The preposition '往' (wǎng) is used to indicate the direction of an action. It is placed before a direction or destination and followed by a verb of movement to show where the subject is heading.
Examples
从这儿一直往前走。
Cóng zhè'er yìzhí wǎng qián zǒu.
Go straight forward from here.
请往左边看。
Qǐng wǎng zuǒbiān kàn.
Please look toward the left.
公共汽车往火车站开。
Gōnggòng qìchē wǎng huǒchēzhàn kāi.
The bus is driving toward the train station.
Common mistakes
Placement of the verb before '往' (e.g., saying '走往前' instead of '往前走'). The direction always comes before the action.
Tip
Think of '往' like an arrow; it points the way before you actually perform the movement.
