总算

zǒngsuàn

finally

Structure

Subject + 总算 + Verb Phrase / Adjective

How it works

The word '总算' (zǒngsuàn) is used to indicate that a desired result has finally been achieved after a long period of waiting, effort, or difficulty. It carries a tone of relief or satisfaction. It can also be used to express that something is 'on the whole' or 'at least' satisfactory.

Examples

经过多天的努力,他总算完成了这项任务。

Jīngguò duō tiān de nǔlì, tā zǒngsuàn wánchéngle zhè xiàng rènwù.

After many days of hard work, he finally completed this task.

天黑以前,我们总算赶到了目的地。

Tiānhēi yǐqián, wǒmen zǒngsuàn gǎndàole mùdìdì.

Before it got dark, we finally reached our destination.

考试结束了,我总算可以放松一下了。

Kǎoshì jiéshù le, wǒ zǒngsuàn kěyǐ fàngsōng yīxià le.

The exam is over; I can finally relax for a bit.

Common mistakes

Do not confuse '总算' with '终于' (zhōngyú); while both mean 'finally', '总算' more strongly emphasizes the fulfillment of a wish or relief, whereas '终于' is more neutral and focuses on the objective result.

Tip

If you are feeling relieved that a difficult situation is over, '总算' is usually the better choice to express that emotion.
