HSK 3
把 + O + V + 了
bǎ + O + V + le
V'ed the O
Structure
Subject + 把 + Object + Verb + 了
How it works
The 'Ba' structure is used to emphasize how an object is disposed of, handled, or manipulated by an action. It shifts the focus from the subject to the result or change in state of the object. It is essential to use this structure when the verb has a specific result or completion marker, such as 'le'.
Examples
妈妈把衣服洗了。
Māma bǎ yīfu xǐ le.
Mom washed the clothes.
弟弟把牛奶喝了。
Dìdi bǎ niúnǎi hē le.
Younger brother drank the milk.
由于太累,我把作业忘了。
Yóuyú tài lèi, wǒ bǎ zuòyè wàng le.
Because I was too tired, I forgot the homework.
Common mistakes
Don't use the 'Ba' structure with verbs that don't involve physical manipulation or a change of state, such as 'to be' (shì) or 'to like' (xǐhuan).
Tip
Think of 'Ba' as 'taking' the object and doing something to it. If the object doesn't move or change, you probably don't need 'Ba'.
