HSK 3

把 + O + V + direction

bǎ + O + V + direction

V the O to DIRECTION

Structure

Subject + 把 + Object + Verb + Directional Complement (e.g., 进来/回去/下来)

How it works

This structure is used to describe moving an object to a new location or direction through an action. The 'direction' part usually consists of directional complements like '进来' (come in), '出去' (go out), or '过来' (come over). It emphasizes how the object's position has changed as a result of the verb.

Examples

请把书拿出来。

Qǐng bǎ shū ná chūlái.

Please take the book out.

他把自行车骑回去了。

Tā bǎ zìxíngchē qí huíqù le.

He rode the bicycle back.

老师把作业发下来了。

Lǎoshī bǎ zuòyè fā xiàlái le.

The teacher handed out the homework.

Common mistakes

Placing the object after the directional complement (e.g., saying '把拿出来书' instead of '把书拿出来').

Tip

If the direction refers to a specific place (like 'home' or 'school'), that place must be inserted inside the directional complement, for example: '回家' (return home) or '进教室去' (go into the classroom).
