HSK 3

把 + O + V + result

bǎ + O + V + result

V the O until RESULT

Structure

Subject + 把 + Object + Verb + Result (Complement)

How it works

The '把' (bǎ) structure is used to describe how an action affects or changes a specific object. In this pattern, the focus is on the result or final state of the object after the action is completed.

Examples

妈妈把作业看完了。

Māma bǎ zuòyè kàn wán le.

Mom finished reading the homework.

请把门打开。

Qǐng bǎ mén dǎ kāi.

Please open the door.

弟弟把我的杯子喝干了。

Dìdi bǎ wǒ de bēizi hē gān le.

My younger brother drank my cup dry.

Common mistakes

Using the '把' structure with a simple verb that has no result or change, such as '我把书看' (Incorrect). It must always have a result, like '我把书看完汉了' (Correct).

Tip

Think of '把' as a handle. You take an object and do something to it until it reaches a new state. If there's no change or specific result, you usually don't need '把'.
