替

tì

on behalf of

Structure

Subject + 替 + Someone + Verb (Phrase)

How it works

The word '替' is a preposition meaning 'for' or 'on behalf of.' It is used when someone performs an action in place of another person or acts for their benefit. It is often interchangeable with '为' (wèi) or '给' (gěi) in certain contexts, but specifically emphasizes the act of substitution.

Examples

你可以替我开一下会吗?

Nǐ kěyǐ tì wǒ kāi yíxià huì ma?

Can you attend the meeting on my behalf?

我很替他的健康担心。

Wǒ hěn tì tā de jiànkāng dānxīn.

I am very worried about his health for him.

大家都很替你感到高兴。

Dàjiā dōu hěn tì nǐ gǎndào gāoxìng.

Everyone is very happy for you.

Common mistakes

Confusing '替' with '帮'. While '帮' means to help someone do something together or assist, '替' usually implies doing the entire action so the other person doesn't have to.

Tip

Think of '替' as 'replacement.' If you are doing something instead of someone else, '替' is your best choice.
