HSK 2
比 N V (O V) 得 A
bǐ N V (O V) dé A
V (O) more A than N
Structure
A + 比 + B + Verb (+ Object + Verb) + 得 + Adjective
How it works
This structure is used to compare the manner or result of an action between two people or things. It combines the comparison word '比' with a complement of degree '得' to describe how well, fast, or effectively an action is performed.
Examples
他比我跑得快。
Tā bǐ wǒ pǎo de kuài.
He runs faster than I do.
姐姐比我跳舞跳得好。
Jiějie bǐ wǒ tiàowǔ tiào de hǎo.
My older sister dances better than I do.
妹妹比我写字写得漂亮。
Mèimei bǐ wǒ xiězì xiě de piàoliang.
My younger sister writes characters more beautifully than I do.
Common mistakes
Forgetting to repeat the verb when an object is present (e.g., saying '他比我学汉语得快' instead of '他比我学汉语学得快').
Tip
If the verb has an object, you must repeat the verb before '得'. Alternatively, you can move the object to the beginning: '汉语他比我学得快'.
