HSK 2
还 V
hái V
still V-ing
Structure
Subject + 还 + (在) + Verb
How it works
The adverb '还' (hái) is used to indicate that an action or a state is continuing. It emphasizes that something has not changed despite the passage of time or expectations.
Examples
已经十一点了,他还在工作。
Yǐjīng shíyī diǎn le, tā hái zài gōngzuò.
It's already eleven o'clock, and he is still working.
外面还在下雨吗?
Wàimiàn hái zài xià yǔ ma?
Is it still raining outside?
你还没做完作业吗?
Nǐ hái méi zuò wán zuòyè ma?
Have you still not finished your homework?
Common mistakes
Placement of '还' after the verb or after '在'. It must always come before the verb or the '在' particle.
Tip
If the sentence involves a continuous action, '还' is very frequently paired with '在' (hái zài) to mean 'still in the middle of doing something'.
