HSK 2

还没 V

hái méi V

still haven't V'ed

Structure

Subject + 还没 + Verb (+ Object)

How it works

The '还没' (hái méi) structure is used to indicate that an action has not yet occurred or a state has not yet been achieved, often implying that it is expected to happen. It is the negative form of '已经' (yǐjīng) or actions marked with '了' (le).

Examples

我还没看那个电影。

Wǒ hái méi kàn nàge diànyǐng.

I haven't seen that movie yet.

老师还没来教室。

Lǎoshī hái méi lái jiàoshì.

The teacher hasn't come to the classroom yet.

弟弟还没写完作业。

Dìdi hái méi xiě wán zuòyè.

Younger brother hasn't finished his homework yet.

Common mistakes

Do not use '了' (le) at the end of a negative '还没' sentence, as '了' usually indicates an action has happened.

Tip

You can add '呢' (ne) at the end of the sentence to emphasize that the action is still pending or expected.
