A + A + 的
A + A + de
A (with characteristics)
Structure
Noun + (Adjective + Adjective) + 的
How it works
In Chinese, single-syllable adjectives can be reduplicated (AA) to describe a noun's characteristics. This pattern often adds a descriptive, vivid, or 'cute' tone to the sentence, usually implying a sense of appreciation or focus on detail. The particle '的' (de) is almost always required at the end of the structure.
Examples
她的眼睛圆圆的。
Tā de yǎnjīng yuán yuán de.
Her eyes are round.
西瓜大大的,甜甜的。
Xīguā dàdà de, tián tián de.
The watermelon is big and sweet.
宝宝的小手红红的。
Bǎobǎo de xiǎoshǒu hóng hóng de.
The baby's little hands are red.
Common mistakes
Do not use intensifying adverbs like '很' (hěn) or '非常' (fēicháng) before reduplicated adjectives. Saying '很圆圆的' is incorrect.
Tip
Think of this structure as adding a 'touch of affection' or emphasis; it's very common when describing physical features of people, pets, or food.
