HSK 3
N 呢? (where)
N ne?
where is N?
Structure
Noun / Pronoun + 呢?
How it works
The particle '呢' can be used after a noun or pronoun to form an elliptical question asking for the location of someone or something. It is a shorthand way of saying 'Where is...?' and is commonly used when the speaker is looking for something specific.
Examples
我的手机呢?
Wǒ de shǒujī ne?
Where is my cell phone?
小王呢?他去哪儿了?
Xiǎo Wáng ne? Tā qù nǎr le?
Where is Xiao Wang? Where did he go?
我们的地图呢?你带了吗?
Wǒmen de dìtú ne? Nǐ dài le ma?
Where is our map? Did you bring it?
Common mistakes
Do not use '呢' in this sense if the location is already mentioned in the sentence; it's only for asking 'where is' when the location is unknown.
Tip
Think of this construction as a faster, more casual alternative to using '...在什么地方?' (zài shénme dìfāng) or '...在哪儿?' (zài nǎr).
