HSK 3

S + Q1 + 就 + Q2

S + Q1 + jiù + Q2

S acts so Q1 = Q2

Structure

Subject + Question Word 1 + 就 + (Subject) + Question Word 2

How it works

This structure uses two identical interrogative pronouns (like 什么, 谁, 哪儿) to indicate that the second action or choice depends entirely on the first. It translates to 'whatever,' 'whoever,' or 'wherever' in English, showing that the two parts refer to the same thing.

Examples

你想去哪儿我们就去哪儿。

Nǐ xiǎng qù nǎ'er wǒmen jiù qù nǎ'er.

We will go wherever you want to go.

谁在那儿我就跟谁说话。

Shéi zài nà'er wǒ jiù gēn shéi shuōhuà.

I will talk to whoever is there.

什么便宜我就买什么。

Shénme piányí wǒ jiù mǎi shénme.

I will buy whatever is cheap.

Common mistakes

Forgetting to use the 'same' question word in both parts of the sentence (e.g., using '什么' in the first part and '它' in the second).

Tip

Think of this as a 'mirror' structure; the second question word must reflect exactly what the first one refers to.
