HSK 3

S1 + Q + S2 + 就 + Q

S1 + Q + S2 + jiù + Q

S2 follows S1

Structure

Subject 1 + Question Word + Subject 2 + 就 (jiù) + Question Word

How it works

This structure is used to express that the choice of the second person depends entirely on the choice of the first person. It uses two identical interrogative pronouns (like 'what', 'who', 'where') to refer to the same thing, person, or place.

Examples

你想去哪儿,我就去哪儿。

Nǐ xiǎng qù nǎ'er, wǒ jiù qù nǎ'er.

I will go wherever you want to go.

谁喜欢他,他就喜欢谁。

Shéi xǐhuān tā, tā jiù xǐhuān shéi.

He likes whoever likes him.

哪种便宜,我就买哪种。

Nǎ zhǒng piányí, wǒ jiù mǎi nǎ zhǒng.

I will buy whichever one is cheaper.

Common mistakes

Forgetting to use the 'jiù' (就) in the second clause, which is necessary to connect the two parts of the sentence.

Tip

Think of this as a 'mirror' structure—the question word in the second part must be exactly the same as the one used in the first part.
