HSK 3
V 了 (change)
V le
(didn't V but) now V
Structure
Subject + (Verb Phrase) + 了
How it works
This usage of the particle '了' (le) marks a change of state or a new situation. It indicates that a condition that wasn't true before has now become true, often translated as 'now' or 'starting to.'
Examples
现在我可以穿漂亮的裙子了。
Xiànzài wǒ kěyǐ chuān piàoliang de qúnzi le.
Now I can wear beautiful dresses.
下雨了,我们不出去了。
Xià yǔ le, wǒmen bù chūqù le.
It's raining now, so we aren't going out anymore.
宝宝会说话了。
Bǎobao huì shuōhuà le.
The baby can talk now.
Common mistakes
Confusing 'change of state' 了 with 'past tense'; this 了 focuses on the current new situation, not when the action happened.
Tip
Think of this '了' as a signal that the status quo has shifted. If you can add 'now' or 'anymore' to the English sentence, you likely need a change-of-state '了'.
