HSK 4

V 完

V wán

finish V

Structure

Subject + Verb + 完 (+ Object)

How it works

The result complement '完' (wán) is used immediately after a verb to indicate that an action has been completed or finished. It focuses on the conclusion of the activity rather than the quality of the result.

Examples

我已经吃完午饭了。

Wǒ yǐjīng chī wán wǔfàn le.

I have already finished eating lunch.

等我做完作业,我们就去踢足球。

Děng wǒ zuò wán zuòyè, wǒmen jiù qù tī zúqiú.

When I finish doing my homework, we will go play soccer.

这本小说我还没看完。

Zhè běn xiǎoshuō wǒ hái méiyǒu kàn wán.

I haven't finished reading this novel yet.

Common mistakes

Don't place the object between the verb and '完'; for example, say '吃完饭' (chī wán fàn), not '吃饭完' (chī fàn wán).

Tip

To negate this structure in the past or present, always use '没' (méi) or '没有' (méiyǒu) before the verb.
