HSK 2
V 过
V guò
V'ed before
Structure
Subject + Verb + 过 + (Object)
How it works
The particle '过' (guò) is used after a verb to indicate that an action has been experienced at least once in the past. It emphasizes that the event is a completed life experience rather than just a recently finished action.
Examples
我看过这部电影。
Wǒ kàn guò zhè bù diànyǐng.
I have seen this movie (before).
他学过两个月汉语。
Tā xué guò liǎng gè yuè Hànyǔ.
He has studied Chinese for two months.
你吃过北京烤鸭吗?
Nǐ chī guò Běijīng kǎoyā ma?
Have you ever eaten Beijing roast duck?
Common mistakes
Do not confuse '过' with '了'. Use '过' for past experiences (have done) and '了' for completed actions (did). For example, '我吃饭了' means I ate, but '我吃过' means I have had the experience of eating that food.
Tip
To make a sentence negative, always use '没有' (méiyǒu) before the verb and keep '过' after the verb. Example: '我没有去过。'
