V 过 PLACE # 次

V guò PLACE # cì

V'ed to PLACE # times

Structure

Subject + Verb + 过 + Place + Number + 次

How it works

This structure is used to indicate how many times someone has had the experience of visiting a specific place. The particle '过' indicates a past experience, while the measure word '次' specifies the frequency of that experience.

Examples

我去过北京两次。

Wǒ qùguò Běijīng liǎng cì.

I have been to Beijing twice.

他来过这家店很多次。

Tā láiguò zhè jiā diàn hěnduō cì.

He has been to this shop many times.

他们去过美国三次。

Tāmen qùguò Měiguó sān cì.

They have been to America three times.

Common mistakes

Placing the frequency (number + 次) before the place name, for example, saying '我去过两次北京' instead of '我去过北京两次'.

Tip

If the object is a person (a pronoun like 'him/her'), the order changes: the pronoun must come BEFORE '次'. For places, the '次' can technically go before or after the place, but placing it after the place is the standard HSK 2 pattern.
