HSK 2
V (O V) 得 比 N A
V (O V) dé bǐ N A
V (O) more A than N
Structure
Subject + Verb + (Object + Verb) + 得 + 比 + Noun + Adjective
How it works
This structure is used to compare the manner or result of an action between two people. When using a verb that takes an object, the verb must be repeated before the complement marker '得', or the object must be omitted.
Examples
他跳舞跳得比我好。
Tā tiàowǔ tiào de bǐ wǒ hǎo.
He dances better than I do.
姐姐跑得比我快。
Jiějie pǎo de bǐ wǒ kuài.
Older sister runs faster than me.
你写汉字写得比他漂亮。
Nǐ xiě hànzì xiě de bǐ tā piàoliang.
You write Chinese characters more beautifully than he does.
Common mistakes
Forgetting to repeat the verb when an object is present (e.g., saying '他写汉字得比我好' instead of '他写汉字写得比我好').
Tip
If the context is clear, you can drop the 'Object + Verb' part and just say 'Subject + Verb + 得 + 比 + Noun + Adjective' to make the sentence shorter.
