HSK 2

V result

V result

(result complements)

Structure

Subject + Verb + Result Complement (+ Object)

How it works

Result complements are added directly after a verb to indicate the outcome or result of an action. Common result complements in HSK 2 include 到 (attaining/perceiving), 完 (finishing), and 好 (completing satisfactorily). Unlike English, Chinese uses these specific words to show whether an action was successful or finished.

Examples

我听懂了老师的话。

Wǒ tīngdǒng le lǎoshī de huà.

I understood what the teacher said.

你写完作业了吗?

Nǐ xiěwán zuòyè le ma?

Have you finished writing your homework?

我们买到票了。

Wǒmen mǎidào piào le.

We successfully bought the tickets.

Common mistakes

Placement of 'not': To negate result complements, use '没有' (méiyǒu) before the verb and remove the '了'. Do not use '不'.

Tip

Think of the result complement as the 'answer' to the verb. While '看' is just the act of looking, '看到' is the result of actually seeing something.
