HSK 2
V一V
V yīV
V for a bit
Structure
Verb + 一 + Verb
How it works
The 'V一V' structure is a form of verb reduplication used to indicate that an action happens for a brief period or is done lightly. It often conveys a sense of 'try it out' or makes the tone of a request sound more polite and casual.
Examples
你听一听这首歌。
Nǐ tīng yi tīng zhè shǒu gē.
Listen to this song for a bit.
我想等一等他。
Wǒ xiǎng děng yi děng tā.
I want to wait for him for a while.
你应该想一想。
Nǐ yīnggāi xiǎng yi xiǎng.
You should think about it for a moment.
Common mistakes
Do not use 'V一V' for actions that take a long time or are very serious; it is only for brief or casual actions.
Tip
In spoken Chinese, the '一' is often pronounced with a neutral tone (yi), sounding very light and quick.
