JLPT N5

で

Location of action / Means

Structure

Noun で

How it works

The particle 'で' is primarily used to mark the location where an action takes place, as opposed to 'に' which marks existence or direction. It also identifies the tools, means, or methods used to perform an action, such as transport or language. Essentially, it specifies the 'how' and 'where' of an activity.

Examples

図書館で宿題をしました。

I did my homework at the library.

バスで学校へ行きます。

I go to school by bus.

日本語で話してください。

Please speak in Japanese.

Common mistakes

Confusing 'で' with 'に' for location; 'で' is for active verbs (eat, study, play), while 'に' is for state-of-being verbs like 'いる' or 'ある' (to exist).

Tip

Think of 'で' as 'by means of' or 'in/at a place'. If you are performing a physical action, 'で' is your best friend.
