JLPT N5

の

Possessive / Noun modifier

Structure

Noun の Noun

How it works

The particle 'の' (no) is used to connect two nouns, indicating possession, origin, or a specific relationship. It functions like the English "'s" or the word "of," where the first noun modifies or qualifies the second noun.

Examples

これはわたしの本です。

This is my book.

さくら大学の学生です。

I am a student of Sakura University.

日本の車はいいです。

Japanese cars are good.

Common mistakes

Do not use 'の' to connect an adjective directly to a noun (e.g., say 'おいしい りんご' instead of 'おいしい の りんご').

Tip

Think of 'の' as a 'glue' for nouns. If you have two nouns and the second one belongs to or is described by the first, you almost always need 'の' between them.
