HSK 4
不管
bùguǎn
no matter
Structure
不管 + [Condition/Interrogative] + (Subject) + 都/也 + [Result]
How it works
The conjunction '不管' (bùguǎn) is used to express that a result remains unchanged regardless of the conditions or circumstances mentioned. It must be followed by sentences containing interrogative pronouns (like 什么, 谁, 怎么) or an 'A or B' alternative structure, and the second clause usually includes adverbs like '都' or '也'.
Examples
不管天气怎么样,他每天都跑步。
Bùguǎn tiānqì zěnmeyàng, tā měitiān dōu pǎobù.
No matter how the weather is, he goes running every day.
不管你信不信,这确实是真的。
Bùguǎn nǐ xìn bù xìn, zhè quèshí shì zhēn de.
Whether you believe it or not, it is indeed true.
不管做什么事,我们都要认真。
Bùguǎn zuò shénme shì, wǒmen dōu yào rènzhēn.
No matter what we do, we should be serious about it.
Common mistakes
Forgetting to include '都' or '也' in the second clause, or using a simple statement without alternatives/interrogatives after '不管'.
Tip
Think of '不管' as 'ignoring the variables.' If you find yourself using '不管', check if you have a variety of possibilities (like 'A or B' or 'whatever') in the first part of the sentence.
