HSK 4

值 $

zhí $

is worth $

Structure

Subject + 值 + Amount/Value

How it works

The verb '值' (zhí) is used to indicate the monetary value or worth of an object. It is often followed directly by a price or amount, similar to the English verb 'to be worth.'

Examples

这台旧电脑现在只值一千块。

Zhè tái jiù diànnǎo xiànzài zhǐ zhí yīqiān kuài.

This old computer is only worth one thousand yuan now.

你觉得这把椅子值多少钱?

Nǐ juédé zhè bǎ yǐzi zhí duōshǎo qián?

How much money do you think this chair is worth?

这个项链值五万人民币。

Zhège xiàngliàn zhí wǔwàn rénmínbì.

This necklace is worth fifty thousand RMB.

Common mistakes

Do not confuse '值' with '值得'. While '值' is for monetary value, '值得' (zhídé) is used to mean 'worth doing' (followed by a verb).

Tip

In casual conversation, '值' can also mean 'to be a good bargain' or 'cost-effective' when used as an adjective, like '太值了!' (What a deal!).
