How it works

"其中" (qízhōng) is a pronoun meaning "among which" or "in it/them." It refers to a specific group or range mentioned previously, functioning as a way to zoom in on a subset of that group.

Examples

我们班有三十个学生，其中男同学有五个。

Wǒmen bān yǒu sānshí gè xuéshēng, qízhōng nán tóngxué yǒu wǔ gè.

There are thirty students in our class, among whom five are boys.

这个项目很难，但我们可以从中学习，发现其中的乐趣。

Zhège xiàngmù hěn nán, dàn wǒmen kěyǐ cóngzhōng xuéxí, fāxiàn qízhōng de lèqù.

This project is hard, but we can learn from it and find the fun in it.

我买了很多水果，其中苹果最甜。

Wǒ mǎile hěnduō shuǐguǒ, qízhōng píngguǒ zuì tián.

I bought a lot of fruit; among them, the apples are the sweetest.

Common mistakes

Do not put the general group after '其中'; '其中' must follow the noun or phrase it refers to.

Tip

Think of '其中' as 'of them' or 'of which'. It always requires a previously mentioned category to make sense.
