几乎 A
jīhū A
almost
Structure
Subject + 几乎 + Verb / Adjective / Numeral Phrase
How it works
The adverb '几乎' (jīhū) is used to indicate that a situation is very close to happening or that a state is nearly complete. It can modify verbs, adjectives, or noun phrases representing quantities. When used before a verb, it often implies that an undesirable situation was narrowly avoided.
Examples
我几乎忘了他的名字。
Wǒ jīhū wàngle tā de míngzi.
I almost forgot his name.
这项工作几乎已经完成了。
Zhè xiàng gōngzuò jīhū yǐjīng wánchéng le.
This work is almost finished.
全班同学几乎都参加了聚会。
Quán bān tóngxué jīhū dōu cānjiāle jùhuì.
Almost all the classmates attended the party.
Common mistakes
Do not confuse '几乎' with '差不多'. While both mean 'almost', '几乎' is more formal and is often used to emphasize that something bad nearly happened, whereas '差不多' is more common in spoken Chinese for general approximations.
Tip
If 几乎 is followed by a negative verb (like 没 or 不), it expresses that something nearly didn't happen but actually did.
