HSK 4
可是
kěshì
but
Structure
Clause 1, 可是 + Clause 2
How it works
The conjunction '可是' is used to express a turning point or transition in a sentence, similar to 'but' or 'however' in English. It is slightly more formal than '但是' in some contexts, though they are often interchangeable. It usually appears at the beginning of the second clause to show a contrast with the first clause.
Examples
虽然他已经很累了,可是他还在学习。
Suīrán tā yǐjīng hěn lèi le, kěshì tā hái zài xuéxí.
Although he is already very tired, he is still studying.
我很想去旅游,可是没有时间。
Wǒ hěn xiǎng qù lǚyóu, kěshì méiyǒu shíjiān.
I really want to go traveling, but I don't have time.
这件衣服很漂亮,可是太贵了。
Zhè jiàn yīfu hěn piàoliang, kěshì tài guì le.
This piece of clothing is very beautiful, but it's too expensive.
Common mistakes
Placement error: Users sometimes place '可是' before the subject of the first clause; it must always introduce the second, contrasting idea.
Tip
To make your sentence sound more natural and emphasize the contrast, use '虽然' (suīrán - although) in the first clause to pair with '可是' in the second.
