HSK 4

对……来说

duì…… láishuō

for, as for

Structure

对 + Person/Subject + 来说,+ Opinion/Statement

How it works

This structure is used to express an opinion or a situation from a specific person's perspective or a certain point of view. It serves the same function as 'for...' or 'as far as ... is concerned' in English. It is often used to emphasize that what follows is a subjective judgment.

Examples

对他来说,这个任务太难了。

Duì tā lái shuō, zhège rènwu tài nán le.

For him, this task is too difficult.

对很多年轻人来说,手机是必不可少的。

Duì hěnduō niánqīngrén lái shuō, shǒujī shì bì bù kě shǎo de.

For many young people, cell phones are essential.

对我来说,环境比工资更重要。

Duì wǒ lái shuō, huánjìng bǐ gōngzī gèng zhòngyào.

As for me, the environment is more important than the salary.

Common mistakes

Students often forget to include the '说' (shuō) at the end, or they incorrectly put the '来说' before the subject.

Tip

If you want to sound even more formal, you can omit the '来' and simply say '对他说' or '对他们说', but '来说' is much more common in HSK 4 speaking and writing.
