HSK 4

尽管

jǐnguǎn

although

Structure

尽管 + Statement A, (但是/可是/却) + Statement B

How it works

"尽管" is a conjunction used to introduce a factual concession, meaning "although" or "even though." It is typically used in the first clause to state a fact, while the second clause expresses a result that contrasts with it. It is often paired with words like "但是," "可是," "却," or "还是" to complete the thought.

Examples

尽管他生病了,但他还是坚持去上班。

Jǐnguǎn tā shēngbìng le, dàn tā háishì jiānchí qù shàngbān.

Although he is sick, he still insisted on going to work.

尽管工作很累,我还是很开心。

Jǐnguǎn gōngzuò hěn lèi, wǒ háishì hěn kāixīn.

Even though the work is tiring, I am still very happy.

尽管天气不好,比赛却照常进行。

Jǐnguǎn tiānqì bù hǎo, bǐsài què zhàocháng jìnxíng.

Despite the bad weather, the match went on as scheduled.

Common mistakes

Forgetting to use a transition word like '但是' or '却' in the second clause, which makes the sentence sound incomplete in Chinese.

Tip

Think of '尽管' as a stronger, more formal version of '虽然'. While they are often interchangeable, '尽管' emphasizes that the fact in the first clause is definitely true.
