HSK 4
特别
tèbié
very much
Structure
Subject + 特别 + Adjective / Psychological Verb
How it works
In HSK 4, '特别' (tèbié) is commonly used as an adverb of degree meaning 'especially' or 'particularly.' It is used before adjectives or psychological verbs to emphasize a high degree, similar to '非常' (fēicháng) but with a stronger sense of being unusual or distinct.
Examples
这里的景色特别漂亮。
Zhèlǐ de jǐngsè tèbié piàoliang.
The scenery here is especially beautiful.
我特别喜欢听中国音乐。
Wǒ tèbié xǐhuān tīng Zhōngguó yīnyuè.
I particularly like listening to Chinese music.
今天的考试特别难。
Jīntiān de kǎoshì tèbié nán.
Today's exam was especially difficult.
Common mistakes
Do not use '很' (hěn) and '特别' (tèbié) together before the same adjective; they are both degree adverbs and only one is needed.
Tip
Remember that '特别' can also be used as an adjective meaning 'special' or 'unique' (e.g., 这个礼物很特别), but when it's followed by another adjective, it always acts as the adverb 'especially'.
