特别的

tèbié de

special

Structure

特别的 + Noun

How it works

"特别的" (tèbié de) functions as an adjective meaning "special" or "extraordinary." It is used to describe a noun that possesses unique qualities or is different from the norm. While "特别" can also be an adverb meaning "especially," adding "的" explicitly marks it as a modifier for a following noun.

Examples

这是一份特别的礼物。

Zhè shì yī fèn tèbié de lǐwù.

This is a special gift.

他是一个性格很特别的人。

Tā shì yī gè xìnggé hěn tèbié de rén.

He is a person with a very special personality.

为了庆祝生日,我们去了一家特别的餐厅。

Wèile qìngzhù shēngrì, wǒmen qùle yī jiā tèbié de cāntīng.

To celebrate the birthday, we went to a special restaurant.

Common mistakes

Forgetting the '的' when using it as an adjective before a noun; saying '特别礼物' is acceptable in casual speech, but '特别的礼物' is grammatically complete for HSK 4.

Tip

Distinguish between the adjective '特别的' (special) and the adverb '特别' (especially). If you want to say 'especially good,' use '特别好' without '的'.
