由于……
yóuyú……
because …
Structure
由于 + Cause/Reason, (所以) + Result
How it works
Due to, because of. '由于' is a formal way to express a reason or cause, similar to '因为' but more common in written Chinese or formal speech. It can be used at the beginning of a sentence or in the second clause to explain a result.
Examples
由于天气的关系,比赛被推迟了。
Yóuyú tiānqì de guānxì, bǐsài bèi tuīchí le.
Due to the weather, the match has been postponed.
由于他的诚实,大家都非常信任他。
Yóuyú tā de chéngshí, dàjiā dōu fēicháng xìnrèn tā.
Because of his honesty, everyone trusts him very much.
由于时间有限,我们今天就先聊到这里。
Yóuyú shíjiān yǒuxiàn, wǒmen jīntiān jiù xiān liáo dào zhèlǐ.
Since time is limited, we will stop our chat here for today.
Common mistakes
Do not use '由于' in very casual, colloquial conversations; '因为' is more natural for daily life.
Tip
In formal writing, '由于' is often paired with '因此' (yīncǐ) or '所以' (suǒyǐ) to show result, but '因此' sounds more professional.
