HSK 4

结果……

jiéguǒ……

As a result…

Structure

Situation/Reason + , + 结果 + Result

How it works

"结果" (jiéguǒ) is used as a conjunction to indicate that the second clause is the result or consequence of the situation described in the first clause. It usually appears at the beginning of the second clause and is often used to describe unexpected or unintentional outcomes.

Examples

他最近工作太累了,结果生病了。

Tā zuìjìn gōngzuò tài lèi le, jiéguǒ shēngbìng le.

He has been working too hard lately, and as a result, he fell ill.

我忘了定闹钟,结果今天迟到了。

Wǒ wàngle dìng nàozhōng, jiéguǒ jīntiān chídào le.

I forgot to set my alarm, and as a result, I was late today.

昨天下雨,他没带伞,结果衣服都湿了。

Zuótiān xiàyǔ, tā méi dài sǎn, jiéguǒ yīfu dōu shī le.

It rained yesterday and he didn't bring an umbrella; consequently, his clothes got all wet.

Common mistakes

Don't confuse the noun '结果' (meaning 'the result/outcome') with the conjunction '结果' (meaning 'consequently'). As a conjunction, it must connect two clauses.

Tip

While '所以' (suǒyǐ) marks a logical conclusion, '结果' is more commonly used for narrative storytelling to highlight an actual, often surprising, consequence that happened.
