HSK 4

V + V + O

V + V + O

VO for a bit

Structure

Verb + Verb + Object (AAB structure)

How it works

This structure is used for the reduplication of separable verbs (VO verbs), where the verb part is repeated to indicate that an action is performed for a short duration or in a relaxed, casual manner. It often softens the tone of a suggestion or request. Only the verb (V) is repeated, while the object (O) remains at the end.

Examples

我们去公园散散步吧。

Wǒmen qù gōngyuán sàn sàn bù ba.

Let's go for a walk in the park.

晚饭后,我喜欢和家人聊聊天。

Wǎnfàn hòu, wǒ xǐhuān hé jiārén liáo liáo tiān.

After dinner, I like to chat with my family for a bit.

工作累了,你可以听听音乐。

Gōngzuò lèile, nǐ kěyǐ tīng tīng yīnyuè.

If you are tired from work, you can listen to some music.

Common mistakes

Do not reduplicate both the verb and the object (e.g., saying '散步散步' is incorrect; it must be '散散步').

Tip

To check if a verb is separable, try putting '了' or an adjective between the two characters; if you can, use the VVO pattern for casual actions.
