JLPT N5
から
From / Because
Structure
Noun から / Sentence から
How it works
The particle 'kara' has two primary functions in N5 grammar. When attached to a noun, it indicates a starting point in time or space (from). When placed at the end of a clause or sentence, it indicates a reason or cause (because/so).
Examples
学校は九時から五時までです。
School is from 9 o'clock to 5 o'clock.
暑いですから、窓を開けます。
Because it is hot, I will open the window.
アメリカから来ました。
I came from America.
Common mistakes
Confusing 'kara' with 'node'. While both mean 'because', 'kara' is more subjective and used for personal opinions or requests, whereas 'node' is more objective and polite.
Tip
Think of 'kara' as a 'starting point'. For time/place, it is the physical start; for logic, the reason is the starting point of the result.
