JLPT N5
すぎる
Too much ~
Structure
Verb stem / Adj stem すぎる
How it works
The grammar point 'sugiru' (すぎる) is used to express that something is excessive or 'too much.' For verbs, you attach it to the stem; for i-adjectives, you drop the final 'i'; and for na-adjectives, you attach it directly to the base.
Examples
このラーメンは辛すぎます。
This ramen is too spicy.
昨日、お酒を飲みすぎました。
I drank too much alcohol yesterday.
そのカバンは高すぎます。
That bag is too expensive.
Common mistakes
Forgetting to drop the 'i' in i-adjectives (e.g., saying 'oishii-sugiru' instead of 'oishi-sugiru').
Tip
Remember that 'sugiru' functions as a Group 2 (Ru-verb), so it conjugates like 'taberu' (sugimasu, sugita, suginai).
