JLPT N5
つもり
Plan to / Intend to
Structure
Verb dictionary form つもり
How it works
The grammar point 'つもり' (tsumori) is used to express a person's intention or plan to do something. It is always preceded by the dictionary form of a verb for positive intentions, or the 'nai' form for intentions not to do something.
Examples
来年、日本へ行くつもりです。
I plan to go to Japan next year.
週末は漢字を勉強するつもりです。
I intend to study Kanji this weekend.
明日はお酒を飲まないつもりです。
I intend not to drink alcohol tomorrow.
Common mistakes
Do not use 'つもり' when talking about natural events or things out of your control (e.g., 'It intends to rain' is incorrect). It is only for conscious intentions.
Tip
To turn this into a question, just add 'ka' at the end (つもりですか) to ask someone what their plans are.
