JLPT N5

てください

Please do ~

Structure

Verb て-form ください

How it works

This grammar point is used to make a polite request or to give instructions to someone. It is formed by taking the 'te-form' of a verb and adding 'kudasai'. While polite, it is most commonly used by teachers to students, or in situations where the speaker has clear authority or is providing helpful directions.

Examples

ここに名前を書いてください。

Please write your name here.

ゆっくり話してください。

Please speak slowly.

ちょっと待ってください。

Please wait a moment.

Common mistakes

Using the dictionary form instead of the te-form (e.g., saying 'kaku kudasai' instead of 'kaite kudasai').

Tip

To make this even more polite or to ask a favor from a superior, use '~te kudasaimasen ka' (Won't you please...?).
