JLPT N5
でしょう
Probably, isn't it?, right?
Structure
Noun/い-adj (plain form) + でしょう / な-adj (drop な) + でしょう / Verb (plain form) + でしょう
How it works
Used to express conjecture or probability ('probably'). It can also be used, with rising intonation, to seek agreement ('isn't it?').
Examples
明日は雨が降るでしょう。
It will probably rain tomorrow.
Common mistakes
Overusing it to imply certainty when it only suggests probability, or using a polite ending instead of the plain form before でしょう.
Tip
Think of it as 'I suppose so' or 'I guess so' for probability, and 'right?' for confirmation.
