JLPT N5

ないでください

Please don't ~

Structure

Verb ない-form でください

How it works

The grammar point 'ないでください' is used to politely ask someone to refrain from doing something. It is formed by taking the negative 'nai-form' of a verb and adding 'de kudasai', which translates to 'please do not'.

Examples

ここで写真を撮らないでください。

Please do not take pictures here.

危ないですから、走らないでください。

Please don't run, because it is dangerous.

忘れないでください。

Please don't forget.

Common mistakes

Forgetting to change the verb to the nai-form first, or using 'imasen' instead of 'nai'. For example, saying 'tabemasen de kudasai' instead of 'tabenaide kudasai'.

Tip

Remember that for Group 3 verbs, 'suru' becomes 'shinai' and 'kuru' becomes 'konai' before adding 'de kudasai'.
