JLPT N3
に関して
Regarding / In regard to
Structure
Noun に関して
How it works
This grammar point is used to indicate the topic or subject matter being discussed, similar to 'about' (について), but it is more formal. It is commonly used in professional contexts, research, and news reports. When modifying a noun directly, it becomes 'に関する' or 'に関しての'.
Examples
この事件に関して、新しい情報が入りました。
New information regarding this incident has come in.
日本の文化に関する本を読んでいます。
I am reading a book concerning Japanese culture.
計画の変更に関しては、明日話し合いましょう。
As for the changes in the plan, let's discuss them tomorrow.
Common mistakes
Mixing up 'に関する' and 'に関して'. Use 'に関する' only when it is followed by a noun (e.g., に関する本); use 'に関して' when it functions as an adverbial phrase for the whole sentence.
Tip
Think of 'に関して' as the formal version of 'について'. If you are writing an essay or giving a presentation, 'に関して' will make you sound more professional.
