JLPT N3

わけだ

That's why / No wonder

Structure

Plain form わけだ

How it works

This grammar point is used to express a natural conclusion or a logical result based on a given set of circumstances. It often translates to 'that's why,' 'no wonder,' or 'it stands to reason that.' It is frequently used when a speaker has just understood the reason behind a situation.

Examples

彼は日本に5年も住んでいるから、日本語が上手なわけだ。

He has lived in Japan for five years, so it's no wonder his Japanese is good.

エアコンが切れている。暑いわけだ。

The air conditioner is off. No wonder it's hot.

20パーセント引きということは、1000円の物は800円になるわけですね。

A 20 percent discount means a 1000 yen item becomes 800 yen, right?

Common mistakes

Do not confuse 'わけだ' (logical conclusion) with 'わけではない' (it doesn't mean that/not necessarily), which is used for partial negation.

Tip

Think of 'わけだ' as the 'Aha!' moment. Use it when you've just connected the dots between a cause and an effect.
