JLPT N3
わけがない
There's no way ~
Structure
Plain form わけがない
How it works
This grammar point is used to express a strong, subjective denial or the speaker's conviction that something is absolutely impossible. It translates to 'there is no way that...' or 'it is impossible that...' based on some logic or evidence. In casual speech, it is often shortened to 'わけない'.
Examples
こんなに難しい問題、子供に解けるわけがない。
There is no way a child can solve such a difficult problem.
彼が犯人のわけがない。ずっと私と一緒にいたんだから。
There's no way he is the criminal. He was with me the whole time.
あんなにたくさん食べたのに、すぐにお腹が空くわけがない。
Even though I ate that much, there is no way I'm hungry already.
Common mistakes
Do not confuse this with 'わけではない', which means 'it's not necessarily the case'. 'わけがない' is a much stronger, absolute denial.
Tip
When using this with Nouns, remember to add 'の' (Noun + の + わけがない), and for Na-adjectives, keep the 'な' (Na-adj + な + わけがない).
