JLPT N5

ましょう

Let's ~

Structure

Verb stem ましょう

How it works

The grammar point ましょう is the polite form used to propose an action or invite someone to do something together. It is formed by removing the 'ます' from a polite verb and adding 'ましょう'. It can also be used to offer help to someone in a 'shall I' context.

Examples

ちょっと休みましょう。

Let's take a little break.

晩ご飯を食べましょう。

Let's eat dinner.

明日、10時に会いましょう。

Let's meet tomorrow at 10:00.

Common mistakes

Do not use ましょう with the dictionary form (e.g., '食べるましょう' is incorrect; it must be '食べましょう').

Tip

To turn this into a question ('Shall we?'), simply add the particle か at the end: ましょうか.
