JLPT N5

まで

Until / Up to

Structure

Noun まで

How it works

The particle 'まで' (made) indicates the end point of a time, place, or situation. It is equivalent to 'until' or 'as far as' in English. It focuses on the limit or terminal point of an action or state.

Examples

午後5時まで働きます。

I will work until 5 PM.

ここから駅まで歩きます。

I will walk from here to the station.

明日まで待ってください。

Please wait until tomorrow.

Common mistakes

Confusing 'まで' with 'までに'. 'まで' means a continuous action until a point, while 'までに' means a deadline (by/no later than).

Tip

Think of 'から' (kara) and 'まで' (made) as a pair. 'Kara' is the starting point (from) and 'made' is the ending point (until).
