JLPT N5

~ませんか

Won't you?, Shall we?, Why don't we?

Structure

Verb ます-stem + ませんか

How it works

Used to invite someone to do something or to make a suggestion. It's a polite way to propose an activity.

Examples

一緒に映画を見ませんか。

Won't you watch a movie with me?

Common mistakes

Confusing it with a simple negative question (e.g., 'Don't you eat?'), when it's primarily an invitation.

Tip

Remember 'masu-form + ka' is a question, and 'masen-form + ka' is an invitation/suggestion.
